About Us

The Centre for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Engineering (CEESE) is a multidisciplinary research centre based at the University of Huddersfield. Our research brings together thermofluids, renewable energy, computational fluid dynamics, biofluid dynamics, digital twins, smart infrastructure and sustainable engineering to address some of the most pressing challenges facing society, industry, healthcare and the built environment. 

Our work focuses on developing practical, evidence-based solutions for cleaner energy systems, healthier indoor environments, efficient buildings, low-carbon technologies, resilient infrastructure and emerging healthcare engineering applications. By combining experimental facilities, high-performance computing, advanced simulation, data-driven modelling and industry collaboration, CEESE supports the transition towards net zero, resource efficiency and more sustainable and healthier communities. 

The Centre builds on the University’s strong track record in thermofluids, energy systems, high-performance computing and applied engineering research. Our team includes academics, researchers and doctoral students with expertise in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, renewable energy, smart buildings, indoor air quality, biofluid and physiological flow modelling, digital twin technologies, machine learning, environmental modelling, sensing, control systems and sustainable design.

A key part of our research activity is the integration of computational and experimental approaches. CEESE uses CFD, multi-physics modelling, artificial intelligence and digital twin methods alongside laboratory testing and real-world validation to understand complex engineering systems and improve their performance. These approaches also support research in biofluid dynamics, including respiratory airflow, aerosol and particle transport, biomedical flows and the optimisation of medical devices. 

The Centre is closely linked with specialist facilities including the SmartHouse Lab, thermofluids and energy systems laboratories, high-performance computing resources and advanced measurement and monitoring tools. These facilities allow researchers to investigate real building performance, ventilation, thermal comfort, pollutant dispersion, heating and cooling systems, renewable integration and intelligent control strategies under realistic operating conditions. 

Through its research, facilities and partnerships, CEESE aims to continuously strengthen its position as a leading centre for sustainable engineering research, supporting the development of technologies and knowledge that improve energy performance, reduce environmental impact and enhance quality of life. 

CEESE supports industry, public-sector organisations and the wider research community by collaborating with partners to deliver innovative solutions to long-term energy, environmental and sustainable engineering challenges.
