Gender Wars, Social Media and Democracy: Towards Cross-Platform and Cross-Cultural Perspectives
In this talk, I will address the question: How to study a cultural phenomenon which takes place simultaneously across digital media platforms and in diverse cultural contexts? I will particularly focus on the relatively recent transnational phenomenon of what could be named ‘gender wars’, that is, heated debates in the public sphere about gender diversity. Social media provide an important context for those debates and are often assessed in relation to their democratic potential. While some authors argue that social media constitute unique counterpublics and provide safe spaces for gender diverse people, others focus on anti-gender and so-called ‘gender critical’ discourses online, conceptualising them in terms of echo chambers and filter bubbles. In this talk, I will offer my first thoughts on how we may think those concepts together and what strategies we may employ to study cultural phenomena from cross-platform and cross-cultural perspectives.
