The Centre for Sustainability, Responsibility, Governance and Ethics (SURGE) aims to bring together researchers, organisations, and communities with a passion for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050. To achieve these objectives, we recognise the need to reduce carbon emissions and move beyond 'business-as-usual.'
Our membership is comprised of academic researchers and professionals stretching beyond our home in Huddersfield Business School, to encompass many different academic disciplines, perspectives and methodological approaches.
SURGE operates to support our core areas of research expertise while providing a supportive environment that encourages collaboration across different academic disciplines, projects and subject areas. Many of our members have an international reputation for their work and we strive to ensure that best practice is shared across the Centre.
Research in SURGE covers a range of substantive topics, including but not limited to: Alternative economic models, sustainable production and consumption, food system transformation, sustainable livelihoods, business and financial ethics, ethical marketing, governance, regulatory and legal issues beyond the corporate world, equality of opportunity, public sector communication, lobbying and public affairs.
We have four key research clusters (see below), each of which works to achieve our key objectives through research, public engagement and impact across environment, society and economy.
