Prof Carlos Torres Formoso
Degree in Civil Engineering awarded by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in December 1980.
M.Sc. in Construction awarded by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in July 1986, under the supervision of Dr. Luiz Fernando M. Heineck. The title of the M.Sc. dissertation was "Analysis of cost indices for the building industry".
Ph.D. awarded by the University of Salford, United Kingdom, in March 1991, under the supervision of Prof. Peter S. Brandon. The title of the Ph.D. thesis was "A knowledge based framework for planning house building projects".
Industrial experience:
Worked for three years (1981 and 1983) as a construction manager in two different construction companies.
UFRGS: member of academic staff of the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, since December 1989.
University of California, Berkeley: visiting scholar between October 1999 and September 2000.
University of Salford: visiting professor between January and September 2011.
Over 80 invited speeches and keynote presentations. Twenty-eight research grants since 1991 in the areas of quality management, lean construction, social housing and Building Information Modeling.
Current/recent grants:
In the last 3 years was awarded around £1,100,000.00 in funding for research.
Recent funded international projects and initiatives: Research Network on Safety Management in Construction, involving UFRGS and 7 other universities from 6 countries (2009-14); Improved value generation through better design process", project jointly developed with the University of Salford, and funded by the Royal Society (2010-12).
Publications:
65 journal papers, 6 books, 5 edited books, 16 book chapters, 5 edited conference proceedings, over 300 conference papers.
