Professor at the School of Computer Science, University of Auckland
Prof Amor undertakes research in the field of Construction Informatics, with a passion for the application of beneficial computer science techniques to the Architectural, Engineering and Construction industries. Achieving interoperability is his core research interest and to achieve this he investigates integrated environments which covers information modelling (e.g. BIM), code compliance checking, process modelling, user interaction, implementation frameworks, information mapping and communication strategies. Since 2003 he has coordinated the working group W78 (IT for Construction) for the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB). He is also a founding member of CIB's priority theme on Integrated Design and Delivery Solutions (2009-). He is Editor-in-Chief of the A-ranked online international Journal of Information Technologies in Construction (ITcon), and has recently completed 9 years as Head of Department of Computer Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Computerised code checking applications have existed for over 50 years, but have not stood the test of time. With the recent advent of sophisticated open representations of both building information (BIM) and codes and standards there are powerful new approaches to create automated code compliance checkers. Recent advances in our abilities to undertake checking will be addressed along with the issues which are still hot topics of research discussion.
Professor of Construction Engineering and Management at the Technion
Prof Sacks' research focuses in the synergies of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Lean Construction. Recent work at the Seskin Virtual Construction Lab at the Technion, which he leads, has included development of BIM-enabled lean production control systems; semantic enrichment of BIM models using machine learning and rule-processing, with application to BIM interoperability, model acquisition from point-cloud data, and code-compliance checking; BIM systems for earthquake search, rescue and recovery; and design for safety. He is the lead author of the "BIM Handbook", currently in its 3rd edition, and of a new book on Lean and BIM implementation in construction, "Building Lean, Building BIM: Changing Construction the Tidhar Way". He has received numerous awards for research and teaching, including the Thomas Fitch Rowland prize of the American Society for Civil Engineering's Construction Institute, in 2016. Prof Sacks is the author or co-author of 78 papers in international peer-reviewed academic journals, 96 peer-reviewed conference papers, and numerous research reports.
The need to supplement BIM models with explicit information according to the concepts defined in building codes is a significant barrier to broad adoption of automated code-checking for BIM models. Semantic enrichment using various AI methods presents a possible path to comprehensive automation. Prof Sacks will discuss the state of the art and opportunities for progress through research.
Professor of Integrated Design, Associate Dean Research and Enterprise
Patricia Tzortzopoulos is Professor of Integrated Design, Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise and Director of the Innovative Design Lab Research Centre at the School of Art, Design and Architecture, University of Huddersfield. She comes from an architectural background and has been developing research for the past 20 years focusing on different aspects of design and the built environment. Her interests cover design management, Lean Design and Construction, value generation, Building Information Modelling, and the design of healthcare facilities. She has developed a number of research projects examining the design process, including front-end design issues, requirements capture and management, evidence based design, participatory design approaches, Building Information Modelling in the retrofit of existing social housing, adoption of code checking in healthcare design, between others. Patricia is an Associate Editor of the Brazilian Journal Ambiente Construido, has supervised research students and published widely. Patricia has been an active member of the International Group for Lean Construction since 1998 and was the champion for the product development and design management theme, having served as reviewer and conference editor/organiser.
This presentation discusses the importance of understanding and evaluating the information content of existing healthcare regulations towards automation. Moreover, the important role of subjectivity embedded in regulations will be explored, in association to the need of hybrid approaches for code checking, which support the automation of objective requirements, but also address subjective requirements through human inputs.
