The Centre for Efficiency and Performance Engineering (CEPE) at the University of Huddersfield aims to improve:
- efficiency of industrial asset condition monitoring, root cause analysis and finite element modelling
- efficiency of structural health monitoring and non-destructive testing of various engineering structures and materials
- efficiency of turbomachinery, including turbochargers
- efficiency of solar energy systems
- sustainability of complex engineering systems
- efficiency of artificial intelligence technologies, internet of things technologies and data analytics technologies for asset condition monitoring
- industrial plant performance
The Founder and first Director of the Centre is Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Ball, of the University of Huddersfield. Since 2017, the Centre Director is Professor Len Gelman.
The CEPE is one of the largest scientific-technical centres of its type in the world. Its mission is to tackle real-world problems using novel, efficient and the most practical technologies and systems.
The Centre specializes in:
- fault diagnosis, prognosis and root cause analysis, structural health monitoring and non-destructive testing, vibro-acoustics, rotating speed analysis, motor current signature analysis, diagnostic model development, signal processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning and pattern recognition, sensor development, lubrication and tribology analysis, thermal image modelling and processing and finite element modelling for various engineering applications
- thermodynamics, heat transfer, fatigue, fracture and stress analysis, system engineering analysis, structural integrity analysis, NVH and novel test methodologies for turbomachinery/vehicle applications
We are recognized internationally as one of the world's leading research centres in the field of plant condition and performance monitoring and in the field of turbomachinery analysis and development. Our researchers have been developing:
- condition and performance monitoring technologies and systems for various assets since 1991
- novel technologies for turbomachinery/vehicles since 2013
The main focuses of the Centre are applied research and development and fundamental research work to create the next generation of technologies.
Our research is primarily undertaken for UK industry, but we are also receiving funds from the EU for research for European industries.
